This has got to be one of my favorite activities to do with kids. I give each kid one cup and provide rulers and meter sticks. How many cups will it take to make a stack of cups up to the ceiling?

So much great thinking involved. A great intro to a more formal study of linear relationships. And oh my goodness—kids literally jumping up and down with excitement. Not to mention that it’s an activity that highlights students’ strengths that are sometimes undervalued in a classroom—like coordinating others’ efforts and a kind of thoughtful physicality.
I have some lessons in my arsenal that are as good as this one, but man do I wish I had even more.
