In Algebra 1, we’ve begun the year by focusing on algebraic expressions. The past few days, we’ve let expressions generate number patterns by plugging in 1, 2, 3, … for the variable.
Today I introduced the idea of making bar graphs of the number patterns we’ve been creating. Some students were able to connect the resulting images to their previous encounters with the concept of slope. Actually, one (at least) had started making this connection even when we were just making tables of number patterns.
Anyway, I like the thought of using bar graphs before abstracting to graphing full-on. Plus, everyone was into doing some coloring. 🙂
