Day 39: A Ridged Ellipse

I bought a bunch of paper plates for our high school math art seminar. (The work of Bradford Hansen-Smith has been kicking around in the back of my head.) After some first attempts that didn’t pan out, I started doing these lengthwise crinkle folds, with different spacings for different plates. A student and I then started in on making a stopframe animation with them. It’s as yet unfinished, but the picture above is a still of one of our plates.

I think a really cool conics-themed paper plate film is going to ensue. Sweet!
